Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
